Healthy Weight

As pet lovers, we look for ways to help promote our dog or cat’s quality of life. One important step toward long-term health and well-being is ensuring your pet is at a healthy weight. In this post, we help explain what a healthy weight may look like and break down some ways to help achieve or maintain an ideal body condition for your dog or cat.

What a Healthy Body Weight Looks Like for Pets?

There is no “one-size-fits-all” healthy weight for pets, and, depending on a cat or dog’s breed, height and age, the recommendations for ideal weight will vary. However, pet lovers should still pay close attention to their pet’s body condition (also known as physique) and work with a veterinarian to identify potential weight problems early. To determine if your pet is at risk of becoming overweight or obese, try an at-home body condition check or learn how veterinarians perform the knuckle-test. While these tests can be done at home, a trusted veterinarian is still the best resource to help advise on whether a dog or cat is at a healthy weight.

As a general rule, pet owners should be able to feel a cat or dog’s ribs with minimal fat covering them. A pet’s waist should be easily determined when looking at him or her from above, and an upward slope of the stomach should be visible when observing pets from the side. A cat or dog’s stomach should never hang low to the ground.

Why a Healthy Weight Matters?

Why is it important to keep your pet at a healthy body condition? Remember, maintaining a healthy weight can help improve your pet’s quality of life. When considering slipping your pet a human snack from the table, remember that an overweight or obese dog or cat may suffer from serious related health issues. In the United States, it is estimated that 56 percent of dogs and 60 percent of cats are overweight or obese. Some of the major health risks, which can cause your pet discomfort and decrease their quality of life, include:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart Disease
  • Pancreatitis
  • Kidney Disease
  • Arthritis
  • Cancer

The Role of Diet in Reaching a Healthy Weight

After identifying a potential weight problem, a veterinarian may recommend that a cat or dog switches temporarily to a weight-loss or weight management pet food to help achieve a healthier, more comfortable weight.

These pet foods will include specific variations to help your pet, such as increased fiber, protein, and other essential nutrients to help your dog or cat feel more satiated and fuller, reduce begging, and maintain muscle, while reducing caloric intake. These foods can help reduce caloric intake but still ensure your pet receives the right amounts of essential nutrients. It is important for pet lovers to consult with their veterinarian when determining a weight-loss plan before simply feeding less of the pet’s regular food, as this can deprive dogs or cats of important nutrients.

In addition, some pet food labels will feature that the product is lower in calories or fat. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) creates model pet food regulations and label guidelines that can be adopted by states. AAFCO’S label guidelines include specific language to help regulate claims for weight-loss or weight management pet foods. This includes language such as “light,” “low-calorie,” “low-fat,” “reduced calorie,” or “reduced fat.”

While diets labeled these ways may have lower energy in the form of calories or fat, they must still meet the minimum requires for pets at an ideal bodyweight and may not meet the needs of an aggressive weight loss plan.

How to Help Pets Achieve and Maintain a Healthy Weight?

Maintaining a pet’s healthy weight requires a combination of proper nutrition, activity and preventive care. Some important steps include:

Regular Veterinary Visits: Pets should see a veterinarian regularly for check-ups, at which time owners can ask about nutrition and discuss weight-loss and management plans, if necessary.

Practice Portion Control: At home, it’s important for pet owners to practice portion control with cat and dogs and ensure that they are measuring out the recommended serving size for their pet. Everyone in the household is responsible for keeping pets safe and healthy and should accurately keep track of how much food a pet is getting each day to avoid overfeeding.

Mindful Treating: Our video shares some simple feeding and treating tips to help keep your pet at a healthy weight. For example, avoid feeding pets table scraps that are high in fat and calories, and limit your pet’s treat consumption to up to 10 percent of their daily calories.

Finding Fun Activities: Staying active will also help keep pets at a healthy weight. Whether it’s extra walks around the neighborhood, playing catch, and or using cat toys, fun activities can be a great form of exercise for pets. These can not only help increase the bond with our pets, but also help us stay more active, too.

How to walk your dog like a pro and protect your pet

Working as a dog walker is rewarding: you get to care for adorable pups and enjoy the outdoors while getting some steps in. But as with any profession, dog walkers need to have the right tools to do their jobs safely.

At Pet and Home Care, we provide Pet Care Team Training and Pet Pro Hero Training for our staff. In addition to these training protocols, our dog walkers use company-issued leash belts to ensure the pups are attached to them at all times.

But even if you don’t undergo formal pet sitting and safety training, there are a few basic steps you can take to make sure your dog walks are more fun, comfortable, and above all, safe!

Make sure all equipment fits snugly. This is to ensure that pets can’t wiggle out of their leashes or harnesses. But you don’t want to make it TOO tight. A good rule of thumb is to make sure you can comfortably slide your finger between the harness and your pet.

Ensure that ID tags are worn at all times. By law, when a dog is in a public place, it must wear a collar. But even if there wasn’t a law, tags are a common sense solution to help you reconnect with your dog if it ever goes missing.

Use a collar AND harness. Harnesses are a better choice for walking dogs because they don’t put pressure on the neck.

Stay connected with your pup. Use hands-free dog leashes or leash belts to make sure your dog can’t get away, even if you somehow drop the leash. These belts also offer the added benefit of relieving any strain off your hands, wrists, arms, and shoulders.

Avoid touching the dog’s collar and harness more than necessary. Some dogs are sensitive to their collars being touched and respond negatively while being touched in that area. Collars can also cause skin irritation even without excessive touching.

Make sure you have enough poop bags on hand to clean up waste. Plastic bags are one of the most common methods of cleaning up dog poop. You can reuse plastic grocery bags or buy a keychain attachment with biodegradable bags. This is the most convenient, hassle-free way to pick-up pet waste.

Keep Your Dog Happy, Even When You’re Away

Your life is busy, so of course, you can’t always be there 24/7 to care for your pup. Luckily at Pet and Home Care, your pets receive love and one-on-one attention while you’re away. Summer Tips for Dogs

Summer Tips for Dogs

1. Provide plenty of water and shade

Dehydration in dogs and cats is a real possibility during the summer. Our dogs get much thirstier than we do when they get hot. Signs of dehydration include dry gums and excessive drooling. Make sure your pet always has access to fresh, clean water inside the house and bring a bottle. You might also switch to a wet dog food during the hotter months to increase fluid intake.

2. Know the signs

A dog's normal temperature is between 100° and 103°F, while a normal temperature in cats ranges from 100.4º to 102.5ºF. Anything higher than that means your pet’s in danger.

Watch for these possible symptoms of overheating:

  • Heavy panting
  • Dry or bright red gums
  • Thick drool
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Wobbly legs

3.Never leave your pet in the car

Most pets love riding in cars. But they wouldn’t enjoy being stuck in it somewhere in the parking lot when it heats up to over 100 degrees.Leaving your pets in cars not only dangerous to your pet, but it is also illegal in 16 states that have specific “hot car” laws. So, either take your pet with you or leave it at home. If you see a pet left alone in a car under dangerous condition, take action immediately - try searching for the owner asap or even call the police.

Principles of Pet Hydration

80 percent of a pet’s body is water, compared to 55 to 60 percent in humans! The amount of water an animal needs depends on activity level, weight, and diet. In general, a dog will need 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight per day for optimal pet hydration. Having sufficient water intake allows the body to flush toxins, keeps organs hydrated, and keeps energy levels up.

Meal Times

In warmer weather, an animal’s appetite usually decreases, just like ours. You may find it helpful to feed your pet at cooler times of the day or offer small meals throughout the day. You can moisten a pet’s dry food with some water to help increase their fluid intake. Make sure your pet has access to water at all times, changing it frequently to keep it fresh.

Tips to Keeping Your Pet Hydrated

Whenever you’re drinking water, make sure to think of your pet!

Offer fresh water and have multiple bowls available in the areas where your pet hangs out the most. At night, place drinking water by your pet’s sleeping spot.

  • Try to limit the amount of time your pet spends in the sun.
  • Do not leave a pet in the car unattended, ever!
  • Plan ahead, reserve pet care services in advance to ensure your pets have the best care during this summer.
  • Try and exercise your pet at the cooler times of the day, so you can safely give your pet some vigorous exercise.
  • Trim your pet’s coat if they are particularly furry, long-haired breeds to help cope with the warmer temperatures.
  • Small paddling pools can be fun and help your pet cool down.
  • Put ice cubes in the water dish to entice more drinking.
  • Add water to their food to increase daily water intake.

Pets that are elderly, young, or overweight and those with underlying medical problems tend to be more vulnerable in hot weather. To reduce the risk to your pet, ensure they do not spend long periods in the sun and make sure they have access to plenty of shade or air-conditioning.

What Are the Symptoms of Dehydration?

  • Loss of skin elasticity.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Vomiting with or without diarrhea.
  • Reduced energy levels and lethargy.
  • Panting.
  • Sunken, dry-looking eyes.
  • Dry nose.
  • Dry, sticky gums.

3 Reasons Why You Should Treat Your Dog to a Mid-Day Walk Every Day

1. Increased pet Health

Giving your pet three or more 15-minute walks a day is one of the best things you can do to keep them healthy. Exercise keeps a dog's muscles toned and metabolic process running smoothly.

2. Conserve Time

Are you unable to run home for lunch because of your lengthy commute? Hiring a mid-day dog walker can help you manage that even if you work from home and are unable to take a break

3. A dog that is drained is a good dog!

Burning off extra energy on a pleasant stroll will prevent your dog from developing damaging negative behaviours within your house. Your pet will be able to expend some of that extra energy by petstore going for petwalk, in the middle of the day and can then relax until you get home .
